Uploading your web page to the Internet

Congratulations! You have a web page and you are ready to get your first website.

You should consider finding a FREE website. You may already be eligible for a free website with your Internet Service Provider (ISP), if not, search the Internet under Free Web Hosting. Please keep in mind that nothing is really free.  If you get a free website from your Internet Service Provider, you already pay for it when you pay your monthly service fee. If you get a website from a free Internet hosting site, your pages are paid for by those who paid your host to place ads on your web pages. If the web host claims there are no ads, look for hidden costs.

I signed up for my first website with Geocities in 1995 and I will give instructions on signing up with them simply because I know more about this web host than others. You may decide to have your web page hosted elsewhere and that web host will most likely be as good, and maybe better than Geocities. I am only giving instructions for Geocities because I am very familiar with it.

To get your free Geocities website go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/

Click the tab that says Sign Up Now under the tab that says Get a site for free!

Enter your Yahoo! ID and password if you are already a member, otherwise click Sign Up.

It is not a good idea to use your name as an ID and you should never provide personal information on your web page.

Once you have your website account you can sign it at:
https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify2?.src=geo&.intl=us&.done=http://geocities.yahoo.com/
(add this website to your favorites)

You are now in the GeoCities Control Panel. You should take time to check the links in the Getting Started box. Many of the questions you may have will be answered here.

Upload your first page

Your first page must be named: index.html (all low case).

Click the Create Update tab.

Scroll down to the box labeled File Management Tools
and click File Manager

Click the box that says Open File Manager

Click the box that says Upload Files

Click the Browse button then find your files on your computer and make sure to include any image files you may need.

Click Upload Files

Return to File Manager

You may need to Refresh File Manager if your page does not open correctly.

Congratulations!
Your first web page is on the Internet.

Your new web address is:
http://www.geocities.com/  plus your yahoo ID

You may now add more pages to your website. You may name your additional pages anything you wish, but make sure there are no spaces in the page name.

example: mydog.html  or mycat.html

Remember to create a link to these new pages on your first page, index.html
